Thirteenth time lucky

£55.00

‘The Silver Fox’, Piero Taruffi, pilots his gorgeous Ferrari 315 Sport through the winding roads of Tuscany on his way to taking victory in the 1957 Mille Miglia. Despite entering the great event nine times previously Taruffi had never won. On the eve of the race the 50 year old promised his wife Isabella that he would retire if he won this, his thirteenth attempt. As luck would have it his main rivals either retired or crashed and the veteran Italian returned to Brescia, after ten and a half hours of flat out driving, the victor. He duly kept his promise and retired from racing after an amazing career in motorsport. Unfortunately due to a tragic accident involving his Ferrari teammate Alfonso de Portago the 1957 Mille Miglia was the last ever competitive running of this truly extraordinary race.
