The Ultimate Test

£55.00

In the 1980s the Paris Dakar Rally quickly emerged as the worlds most dangerous and formidable rally raid, the ultimate endurance test for both man and machine. Whilst its early years were mostly contested by adventurous amateurs it didn’t take long before car and motorbike manufacturers started sending factory teams into the dunes, desperate to prove themselves in the toughest challenge on the motorsport calendar.

To everyone’s surprise Porsche entered the 1984 event in a four-wheel drive version of its road going sports car, the 911 (953). Despite worldwide scepticism they won at the first attempt. In 1985 they returned with 953/959 prototypes but failed to finish due to mechanical problems. In 1986 the Porsche factory went all in, supplying three highly sophisticated 959 supercars and despite that year’s event being regarded as the hardest ever, they finished first, second and sixth.

Here, car no. 168, the winning factory Porsche piloted by Rene Metege and Dominique Lemoyne, launches through the vast emptiness of the Sahara on its way to another stage win.
