Rally Catalunya 1997.

Gilles Panizzi and co-driver Herve Panizzi charge through a winding section of Spanish Tarmac, taking large cuts and kicking up dust on their way to another stage victory.

The Peugeot Team of Panizzi and Delecour, along with their wild 306 Maxi kit cars, took the rally by storm and seriously threatened to take the scalps of the WRC regulars. Although only front wheel drive the F2 Regulations allowed them to be much lighter than WRC cars, rev to 10,000 rpm, making them almost as powerful, and have their set ups heavily weighted towards tarmac events. The French duo topped the time sheets throughout the rally but a puncture on Stage 6 meant the Panizzi brothers would have to fight their way back to a well earned 3rd place whilst, unfortunately for Delecour, a mechanical would result in a DSQ for his car.

Warning shots were fired however, and for the rest of the season, and the following few years, all tarmac events were sabotaged by these F2 wild cards, much to the fans delight and regular WRC team’s anguish.

In the right hands, with dry winding tarmac, they were a spectacular sight and the perfect underdog.
