Within the UK the Ford Escort during the 1970s was synonymous with rallying and for good reason, between 1972 and 1979 it won 8 consecutive Lombard RAC Rallies along with numerous other national and club titles. The humble rear wheel drive Escort in ‘RS’ trim was, and still is, a true rally legend. In ‘78 and ‘79 legendary driver Hannu Mikkola, along with co driver Arne Hertz, dominated ‘the Lombard’ with masterful displays of driving across the UK’s toughest rally stages.
Here, Hannu shows maximum commitment on a treacherous right hander, high up on a Welsh hill side as the early sun rises and thick fog masks the valley floor below. The Escort’s screaming BDG blares as its rear tyres fight for grip on another gruelling gravel stage.
